Before we start the process, let’s imagine two scenarios:

Scenario 1:

You are enlightened one day and have an epiphany to start a blog on your favourite hobby – stamp collecting!

You setup your domain; “www.ifreakinglovestamps.com” (someone please buy this domain – it would be hilarious), get your hosting and away you go. You start to feverishly type away blog post after blog post on your laptop about your favourite stamps and their origin story.

However, 6 months later, you haven’t even made enough money to buy a first class stamp, never mind quit your day job at the Post Office (I’m sorry I couldn’t help myself).

You give up, and the blog drifts away into the never-ending internet ether never to be seen again.

Scenario 2:

You are visiting this blog post because you’re looking to build a profitable blog as you’re a rationale human being. You decide in your better judgement to scrap the stamp collecting blog idea and instead choose a topic which is better suited to generating revenue through the likes of; affiliate marketing, ad networks, and has the potential to create your own products et cetera, et cetera.

Why this might seem a like I’m being facetious, there are genuinely people out there who will start blogging on a topic they think is niche and a goldmine no one else has ever considered. They never stop to think about the fact that it might have never been touched for a good reason – there’s no money to be made in it.

Now by all means you can try and create a blog around your favourite obscure hobby or passion, and just maybe if the Sun and Moon align and Neptune is in retrograde – you will make money.

However, for the majority of people, this will never happen and they’ll give up after a few months, maybe even weeks after making no money.

Everyone wants to make money from their blog – if someone says they don’t, they’re either lying or crazy and you should stay as far away from them as possible. Who would spend countless hours working on anything, never mind a blog, for it to never make any kind of return – a crazy person that’s who!

Once you realise that your blog is a business and not just a personal journal for yourself, you’re already ahead of the game.

Think of your blog as a business and you’re halfway there.

If you’re reading this guide I’m guessing that you have either tried scenario 1 and it hasn’t worked out and are now looking to make a profitable blog or you’re just starting out and want to make a profitable blog from the very beginning.

Either way, you’ve landing on the right guide and we’re happy to have you.

Now let’s get started!

Are you the right kind of person?

Blogging is by no means a get rich quick scheme. It takes time, commitment and effort to garner any success in this. It’s the same in any business, you get out what you put in. While it may take longer than expected, the rewards can be amazing.

If you’re looking for fast money, this isn’t the business for you unfortunately.

If however, you’re willing to put in the time and work hard, blogging could be for you!

With that out of the way, lets get into the fun stuff!

The Basic 7 Steps:

No matter what kind of blog you’re looking to start, they will all follow the same basic formula when it comes to setting them up and building that foundation for success:

  1. Pick your topic
  2. Decide on a platform
  3. Choose a domain
  4. Find a hosting platform
  5. Install WordPress
  6. Start blogging
  7. Monetise

Depending on where you are in your blogging journey this may look daunting. However, don’t worry as I’m going to explain everything you need to know to get your blog up and running in less than 30 minutes.

Let’s jump right into it!

Picking a Profitable Blog Topic

Think back to the scenario I mentioned earlier with starting a blog on stamp collecting. While that may be a slight exaggeration, you don’t want to make the same mistake and end up choosing a niche or topic that isn’t going to be profitable for your blog.

It’s normal to think you need to be writing about something you have passion for, or are an expert in. However, this isn’t the case, there are lots of bloggers out there who aren’t expects in their chosen topic or niche but have managed to create great useful content and learn how to generate revenue from this.

You can still write with passion about a topic that will be profitable.

It’s also better to niche down at this stage of the process. If you go too wide with your posts and content, once you start building a regular audience, they may become confused if you were producing lifestyle content previously then switch to personal finance.

Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  1. How to make money
  2. Personal finance
  3. Health and fitness
  4. Food
  5. Beauty and fashion
  6. Lifestyle

Which Platform Should I Use?

There are a few free platforms out there that you could use for your blog such as Blogger or WordPress.com. However, there’s a few reasons why you would want to avoid these free options.

The most important reason, is who owns and controls the blog. When you use a free platform, they own and control your blog. This means that at any point your blog could be shutdown and you lose all your hard work and time.

I would 100% recommend that you go self-hosted. This is where you pay for a domain, web hosting and install wordpress.org on your website – We will go into more depth on how to do this in a second!

Not only does this give you complete control and ownership of your content, it also allows you to monetise your blog, which is the whole reason you’re reading this guide.

What Kind of Domain Should I Pick?

Your blog domain is very important, on the face of things it’s part of the overall brand, it makes sense that it should be centred around what your blog content is all about.

For example; https://thedailyhustle.co.uk, is a blog dedicated to sharing useful educational content on both saving and making money online. This should be clear to visitors based purely on the word “Hustle”, it indicates that this will be a website about how to generate more income.

Ideally, you would aim to get a .com domain but .co could also work, or if you’re in the UK, .co.uk would work as well.

You should spend some time thinking about what you would like your blog domain to be. Try and avoid difficult to spell words or mis-spelled words. If someone were to hear the name out loud, they should be able to spell it. Think of here vs hear as an example, you would want to avoid any of these types of words.

Once, you’ve decided what your blog domain is going to be, you can claim this for free when you sign up to our recommended web hosting company.

What The Heck is a Hosting Platform?

As we’ve already established, you don’t want to be using any free blogging platforms such as Blogger or WordPress.com, as you won”t own the blog.

So what are the alternatives then?

In order to monetise and own your blog you will need to self-host your blog with a web host.

How Do I make That Sweet Sweet Moolah?

Now for the potentially $1 Million Dollar question – how do you monetise your blog?

Well there are 101 different ways that you could monetise your blog without selling your soul.

Here are just a few you could try out:

  • Affiliate Marketing
  • Ad Networks
  • Sponsored Posts
  • Paid Courses
  • Membership Areas

Initially while you’re starting to grow your audience, there is no point in trying to get approved for Adsense or any kind of ad network such as AdThrive or MediaVine. You will have no where near enough Sessions and it’s not worth spamming your initial audience with ads while you’re trying to grow.

Instead you should focus on creating helpful and educational content that will be of benefit to your audience. This type of content should be evergreen and allow you to utilise affiliate marketing programs throughout it.

Think downloadables, guides, handbooks, planners – anything that will be helpful to someone in your chosen niche.

Eventually you could even expand on these and turn them into a fully fledged course.

Once you build an audience and are getting consistent numbers in the thousands, you should apply to ad networks and start getting paid for showing ads on your blog.

As you can see there are loads of creative ways for you to generate revenue and have a profitable blog.
